Jay Leno on poor ratings: I would have stayed in later time slot
Jay Leno's jump to 10 p.m. has been anything but smooth, and now the comedian is airing his frustration.
In a lengthy interview with "Broadcast & Cable," the host of the "The Jay Leno Show" takes most of the blame for his new show's poor ratings, but also reveals that the earlier time slot was not his idea.
"Would I have preferred to stay at 11:30?" he asks himself in the interview. "Yeah, sure. I would have preferred that."
After dominating the late night talk show circuit for 17 years at the 11:30 p.m. time slot, NBC pushed Leno up to 10 p.m. in September. The initial results have been less than stellar. Last Monday, "The Jay Leno Show" posted it's lowest numbers yet, with just 4.6 million viewers, less than the rerun of "C.S.I. Miami" that was on CBS.
But Leno is not far from ready to give up on his new show. In fact, he's excited for the challenge of recapturing his ratings.
"I think it's too soon to say whether I regret anything or not . . . ," he says. "My thing is, I did 'The Tonight Show' for 17 years, that's what I did. It's like the America's Cup; you won it, they can't take it away from you. So now you try this and you see what happens."
Leno also said that after so many years at the top, "I enjoy being the underdog."
Despite being skewered in the press for his show's lackluster ratings, Leno has one thing going for him. He has had an easier month than his rival David Letterman, who admitted to having an affair with one of his staffers.
"I wouldn't trade places with Dave now for anything!" says Leno. "I don't think he's getting a free pass."
